\\u201cThe American dream is alive and well,\\u201d Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, says, \\u201cbut only if we work at it.\\u201d

\\u201cWe must continue to work,\\u201d Sears says. \\u201cWe must make sure that our children understand that they must take their place in society, that their job is no less than preserving America for the next generation.\\u201d

Sears, who previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates, is author of the book \\u201cHow Sweet It Is: Defending the American Dream.\\u201d

She was elected as the state\\u2019s lieutenant governor Nov. 3, 2021, becoming the first black woman to hold the position. 

\\u201cSo we can\\u2019t afford to baby our children. They\\u2019re the adults now, and we look to them to keep that charge,\\u201d Sears says. 

America, she adds, \\u201cmust remain the city on a shining hill."
